1950 was a good year in Australia.

The School of the Air broadcast their first ever radio lesson using the transmitter at the Australian Royal Flying Doctor Base at Alice Springs.

The first Australian university was founded in Sydney.

Australians started the 'Chop Picnic' — build a fire under a flat piece of metal between a couple of rocks or bricks and cook a few chops on it — beginning the tradition of the great Aussie barbeque.

Janie Guthrie was born to the best fat lamb producer in the Adelaide Hills.

And what other way to celebrate two memorable birthdays in true Aussie style than to cook up some organic lamb on the barbie!

Janie's Nelyambo lambs were sent from the outback to the Heather's at Sunningdale to finish off, and fatten them up they did. From there, it was off to to a Rural Organic butcher to get processed; all in time for the birthday celebrations! That night, everyone sat down to a wonderful dinner of roast rack of lamb.

Later, Janie opened her presents; one of which was a beautiful pink woollen shawl, hand-knitted specially for the occasion. It was a gift from dear friend John Macarthur - descendant of the Macarthurs who brought the first merinos to Australia. As you can see in the picture above, it draped beautifully across her shoulders as she blew out the candles on her cake.
